Dunbar Walk
Carpentry and joinery for a landed home. A curved fluted counter anchors the entry, with full-height fluted timber panelling, feature TV walls, stone island and dining counters, and fitted bedroom joinery carried through in the same timber palette.
A landed home at Dunbar Walk, completed March 2023. The brief ran to the whole house: an entry
that had to make an impression, living and dining that read as one space, and bedrooms finished in
the same timber palette so nothing felt added on later.
A curved counter, and why the curve is the hard part
The entry is anchored by a fluted counter that turns through a radius rather than meeting at a
corner. Straight fluting is a repeat; fluting around a curve is not. Each blade has to be cut to its
own length and set so the pitch reads as constant to the eye as the surface turns away. Above it,
open shelving with slim metal trim sits against a stone-clad wall, with the shelf returns lining
through to the counter below.
Panelling that has to agree with itself across a room
Full-height fluted timber runs through the reception rooms and down the hallway. On a run that
length the test is not the first panel, it is the twentieth: the flute pitch has to carry across
every joint, and the joints have to fall where they are least visible rather than where the board
happened to end.
In the hallway two doors are concealed in that panelling. Flush faces, continuous flute alignment
across the door line, and no visible frame — the detail only works if the substrate stays flat
and the hinges are rated for a door that heavy. Edge
treatment matters here too: every exposed return on a panelled wall is an edge somebody has to
finish.
Through the rest of the house
The living area carries a feature TV wall with cove lighting and a floating console. The kitchen
pairs timber base units with glazed uppers and a stone dining counter that cantilevers off its
support. In the master bedroom, a slatted timber feature wall runs up and across the ceiling, with
an upholstered headboard panel lit from behind.
